Two new species of Hypancistrus (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the rio Xingu, Amazon, Brazil

Abstract:

Hypancistrus was proposed as a monotypic genus for a highly unique species, H. zebra, known only from a short stretch of the Middle rio Xingu on the Brazilian Shield. Subsequent studies added eight species, all described from river systems draining the Guiana Shield. Analysis of Hypancistrus specimens from the middle and lower Xingu detected two new species that can be separated from its congeners based on color pattern and body size of adults, and that are well known from the ornamental fish trade. Due to their non-overlapping distributions, the prospects of conserving the two species are quite different. One of the species is relatively safe due to its relatively large distribution throughout the Lower Xingu channel up to the downstream end of Volta Grande do Xingu, while the other is in need of urgent protection because it is restricted to a short stretch of the Middle Xingu channel at depths greater than 15 meters, and its distribution lies entirely within the impact zone of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant Complex.

Abstract:

With 76 currently valid species, the bushynose catfish genus Ancistrus is the fourth most species-rich catfish genus, yet Ancistrus diversity remains underestimated, with many species still undescribed. This is especially true of the Peruvian Andean headwaters of the Amazon, which are rich in unnamed Ancistrus species but have received little recent taxonomic attention. We describe a distinctively striped new Ancistrus species from tributaries of the Palcazú River, in the Pachitea-Ucayali-Amazonas drainage basin. The new species differs from all congeners by having black, vermiculated lines covering the head and two to four distinct black, parallel, lateral body stripes from head to caudal fin (vs. body uniformly colored or with dark or light spots or blotches over head and body, or black vermiculate lines on flanks). The new species is the fifth valid species of Ancistrus described from the rich Ucayali River ichthyofauna. It has previously been recognized in the aquarium fish trade as L267.

was genau an Erfahrung willst du wissen?

Meine Tiere fressen alles was angeboten wird, ich pflege die Tiere bei 26°C und neutralem pH-Wert, wobei die Wasserwerte zumindest für die Vermehrung eine untergeordnete Rolle spielen (egal ob weich oder hart).

Revision of the generic classification of pike cichlids using an integrative phylogenetic approach (Cichlidae: tribe Geophagini: subtribe Crenicichlina)

Abstract

Pike cichlids form the largest clade of Neotropical cichlids, with over 100 species presently classified in two genera: Crenicichla (93 species widespread in rivers of South America east of the Andes) and Teleocichla (nine rheophilic Amazonian species). Here, we combined a new dataset of 216 morphological characters with molecular data compiled from published sources, comprising 74 terminal taxa of pike cichlids (68 out of 102 valid species, plus four putative new species), and performed phylogenetic analyses using maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference, and parsimony. Based on a synthesis of our results and previous phylogenies, we propose a new classification in which the clade including all pike cichlids is elevated to the rank of subtribe (Crenicichlina) and the genus Crenicichla is redefined, including three subgenera: Crenicichla (monotypic with the type species), Batrachops (resurected as subgenus), and Lacustria (new subgenus). Teleocichla is maintained as a valid genus and four new genera are proposed: Wallaciia, Saxatilia, Hemeraia, and Lugubria. Our results on character mapping support the hypothesis that resource partitioning in environments with fast-flowing water and rocky beds might have played a role in the origin or maintenance of the great diversity of pike cichlids, resulting in parallel evolution of similar ecomorphs.
